It’s a one versus many problem. So you have to make them irrelevant.

Be where you are, truly where you are at this moment, and see the real territory around you and take stock. And with that reality, even if it’s a painful one, throw away your maps and walk your own path.”

-
Chris Brogan, on Throwing Away The Maps.

There’s a fallacy out there that someone can show you how to get to where you want to go.

That’s not really the case.

What someone can do is show you strategies or processes that worked for them when they were jumping the gate.

Your mileage may vary.

The fact of the matter is, once you decide that the socially acceptable career path is no longer working for you, you’re on your own.

This is, of course, utterly terrifying.

There is some comfort in the fact that other’s have blazed similar trails before you, even if you have too go it alone.

Be brave. Go bold. Jump the gate!

Gatejumping, at it’s core, is about deciding the life you want, the career you want, and ruthlessly eliminating the obstacles to making that a reality.

And where you start is by deciding not to be like everyone else.

Not to follow the rules.

There’s a great post by Johnny B.
This is key to jumping the gate.

The golden key. The one-size-fits-all system that will forever change how we do our work and enable us to unleash hell on our next project.

We simply need to know the five steps and then the world will be ours. (By the way, I’m writing this with one finger pointed squarely in my own chest.)

The problem is that many of us are in love with the idea of being productive more than we really want to produce.
”

-
Todd Henry produces some tough love for the end of the year.

Instead of being productive, produce. Instead of planning to do, do.

Simple, but as Todd notes, we spend so much time looking for the killer app, we forget to actually do something.

What one thing did you do today that scares you? What one thing can you do tomorrow?

Striking out on your own is scary. Going against years of programming on what a career is, or what success is causes a lot of cognitive dissonance, and stress.

It’s important to remember that if something scares you, that’s the direction you need to go in.

Embrace the fear. Do one thing every day that scares you.

Yes, it’s an ad.

No, that doesn’t matter.

There are a couple of takeaways that are key if you are thinking of striking out on your own:

There is significant societal pressure on keeping you on the path-get a job, slave away in a cubicle until you retire, being part of the whole. That’s a constant battle you have to wage to succeed on your own.

Serve others. This is the key to your success, both in business, and in life. Jonathan kinda glosses over this, but it is a trailer after all.

Have something to offer. If you are committed to serve, you need something to offer.

Fear and uncertainty holds you back. It’s an illusion.

More is possible than you believe, but gatekeepers have a vested interest in keeping you in check. This is also an illusion.

See, there’s a lot to unpack in those few minutes, and I’ve just scratched the surface!

If you haven’t checked out Jonathan’s Illuminated Mind, you should. Lots of great information there.

I find that most people take on new jobs, projects and hobbies for three reasons:

To learn something new

To pay the bills

Because they love doing it
